Information technology has developed in very exciting ways over the past 20 years. Who could have foreseen the extent to which personal computers have become part of everyday life? Or that it would cause a social and communication revolution? Or that the Internet would change the communication standards in the society? But now, videoconference, content management systems, information systems, knowledge databases and many other technologies are widely available.
Virtual professional meetings (VPMs) over the Internet are a feature of this new reality. VPMs have become very important for both e-learning and continuous professional development. Using these new technologies, we have held successful events such as the Cardiology Virtual Congress.
LinuxMed first met in 2002 as a 3-day meeting in Buenos Aires city to discuss the actual state of Free and Libre Opensource Software (FLOSS) in Health Care institutions and systems.
Linuxmed 2002 had a very important conclusion - the need for one strong project to bring FLOSS into hospitals in Argentina and Latin America. As a result, the BioLinux Group created the Salud LIbre Project with that objective in August, 2002.
Today, we have the same spirit and the same initiative. We want to share with you what has happened with FLOSS in Health Care environments over the past three years. We have been fortunate in receiving strong support for many Universities, Institutions and Companies that believe in FLOSS.
Why LinuxMed 2005?
Because we believe deeply in FLOSS as a ultimate solution for hospitals and health institutions.
Because we consider FLOSS as a genuine model for software development.
Because FLOSS belongs to everyone in the community.
Because health is a community human right.
For all these reasons we invite you to share and participate in this meeting.
Special thanks to: Argentine Cardiology Federation, Bioengineering School of Entre Rios University at Parana, Teleinformatics Center FAC-CETIFAC in Parana and LAD Linux a Distancia, Argentina and all other Organizations and Institutions that are supporting this event.Aknowledgement to: Prof. Armando Pacher, Dr. Roberto Lombardo, Miss Mariana Ceballos, Miss Gabriela Lell and Miss Corina Espindola.
